Words that make me cringe - annoying idioms, cliches, and other English language abuses
"have a good one" One what? "I seen it" "Quote Unquote" "at the end of the day..." "aks" instead of "ask" "everythink" "Fo Shizzle" and any related "izzle" "So I was like..." "no can do" "Please and thank you" "FYI" "Now more than ever" "notsomuch" "Let's DO lunch. Let's DO a burger....etc" "Touch base with me..." "ciao," "peace out," "lata," or other annoying "hip" ways to say goodbye "Guesstimate" "conversate" "you go, girl" "don't go there" "with all due respect" "fantabulous" "Get your ____ on", e.g., "Get your freak on," "Get your war on" The term 'ice-cold' to describe a chilled drink "Now that's what I'm talkin' 'bout" "convo" as a verb that means "have a conversation with" (e.g. "We need to convo with Gabe about the changes.") People who refer to popular vacation spot Cabo San Lucas as "Cabo" "back in the day" "I'd be more than happy to..." "You're more than welcome." "folks" "You have yourself a good day now" He is/She is/I am ..."so street," "so art," "so book" "Sick man.." "Just chillin'" "fair enough" "Let's agree to disagree." "busted" instead of "broken" "alrighty" "It's all good" "My bad" "Good to go" "No biggie" "I'd hit that" "money" used as an adjective: "he's so money", "that game is money " "'X' is the new 'Y'" "24/7", "24/7/365" the more digits, the more annoying I would love to hear from more people on this topic. Are there any annoying idioms, clichés or phrases that make your blood boil? oh yeah, blood boil, thats annoying too. *update: |

Most of those phrases are derivations from "street" talk. So you can thank the ubiquity of rap music and so-called black culture.
A swim coach I used to have always wanted to "touch base." I made a retching sound when I read it on your list... it still makes me want to gouge my eyes out with a spoon.
As sad as it is, our country becomes dumber every day. Less importance is placed on intelligence and knowledge than ever before.
More people would rather appear less intelligent than they are and talking "street" is a good way to hide your intelligence, though I doubt most people are doing this.
My friend says these stupid things all the time. Not to mention, "for the record" and "jumping the gun." What f#@%@#%ing gun?!
Great list...you've obviously put much thought into your "pet peeves" (which is a phrase that would be on MY list)
Wow, what happened? did your girlfriend use all those and then break up with you?
That wasn't funny and it wasn't worth the rage you apparently have. Get over yourself.
Although most of these comments don't make much sense, understand that most people don't speak proper English anymore. However, I enjoyed this post, it was fantabulous. With all due respect, if you don't like my ideas, you can hit me up, we'll touch base, do lunch and I'll holla at you later....son.
"People who refer to popular vacation spot Cabo San Lucas as 'Cabo'"
Like how many times has this ever happened and who even cares?
You should just slit your wrists, so then you wouldn't have to hear any of these "annoying idioms, cliches, and other English language abuses". You abuse the English language by being a user of it.
You said:
I never saw the appeal of purposely using a non-existent or obviously wrong verb tense.
it should be
I have never seen the appeal....
"Ginormous" - I guess it's a combination of Gigantic and Enormous. Anyone who uses this immediately loses my respect.
"To be perfectly honest" is one that gets on my nerves sometimes... especially when I use it myself! It smacks of dishonesty, doesn't it? What, you mean you're not normally honest?
Using language is a creative process. It evolves, and being sad about that isn't going to make that any less true. There are shortened versions of common phrases in every most languages, and being able to use and understand slang is a mark of fluency.
Yes, I hate how language evolves sometimes. I agree with you on pretty much every one. Not sure about "have a good one", I think it means have a good day or life or experience but I'm not sure. But I completely agree with at the end of the day. If you've ever watched "The Apprentice", which is now over, they have a lot of that...man it's annoying.
fuck off.
This list is indiscriminate to the point where this is hardly a short list of things that personally annoy you. It seems more like a broad swipe at any English besides the Queen's English. If these really annoy you, you must spend quite a lot of time being pretty miserable.
Using "Ever" as a one word sentence (like you did) is annoying. Also when people write or say "nuff said".
old and cranky; afraid of change.
I could care less.
Disdain for cliches - how very, um, pointless!
"The term 'ice-cold' to describe a chilled drink"
I'm assuming you don't like the term because you think it is inaccurate, but in fact, a glass of water containing ice cubes will reach 0 degrees Celsius - 'ice-cold'. It doesn't freeze because there is still plenty of heat remaining to prevent phase change into ice.
Fantabulous is a perfectly cromulent word.
I wonder how often you hear "get a life"...
I can't believe the number one annoying phrase hasn't been mentioned; enjoy! (the exclamation point is definitely a component of why I despise this moronic, insipid word/phrase that has all the sentiment and sincerity of a smiley face.)
Going Geronimo. "I was going to go Geronimo on him for looking at my girlfriend."
I iz in ur dikshunary killin all ur languiges.
terrible fucking post, asshole
"chillaxin".... cant stand it!
you know what i dont like? stupid websites that bitch.
Sounds to me like the people who agree with this list are trying to sound smarter and more sophisticated than they actually are. There are some terrible phrases on this list, like "aks" which is ridiculous I will admit. However, most of this list seems to stem from lack of understanding or just being petty. Languages evolve and change, get over it. The simple fact you created this list of complete and utter pettiness makes me want to use those phrases more often.
whatever (in an argument)
so freaking dismissive, I swear, puts me on the verge of smacking someone upside their head
also 'upside your head' is annoying if used seriously, jokingly it's alright.
"Where is he/she/it at?"
Why use the "at" at all?
I am a special education teacher. My department chair and principal often use the phrase, "In all honesty." It's like biting down on sandpaper. I shudder and rapidly nod my head when I hear them say it.
